Description
Early XIX century Fijian bark cloth beater Description : Rare form of Fijian tapa cloth beater, of casuarina wood. It is oval in cross-section grooved on both convex beating surfaces. Such beater were only found in the interior of the highlands of Viti Levu island, mainly to the west of the central divide, but also in the Wainimala watershed of the eastern highlands. Elsewhere, barcloth beater are rectangular or square in cross section, having four flattened beating surfaces. A very similar one was in the Hooper collection and has been published in Phelps 1976, page 190, item 797. Dimension : 37 cm length, 4 cm wide. Condition : Excellent condition with fine dark deep patina. From an old English collection. Click on the first five images to see close-up pictures.
