Description
Title: Zulu handmade Angel, Msinga, South Africa SUPERBType of Object: DollEthnic Group: Zulu (Msinga, northern Zulu) Country of Origin: South AfricaMaterials: recycled beadwork, cloth, cardboard, glass beads, wireApproximate Age: ContemporaryDimensions: 17 inchesOverall Condition: ExcellentDamage, Repair: NoneProvenance: Bought in Durban, South Africa 2007Msinga women bring these to Durban twice a year. Made from recycled fabric, a T shirt, wire, old beads. No indication of hands. The Zulu people are one of the largest tribes in South Africa, known worldwide for their beadwork. These dolls depict several characters, the healer, the married woman, etc. This one is said to represent an angel because of its wings in the back or a bride for her white outfit. Zulu dolls are dressed in traditional Zulu woman costume, with beaded jewelries, a belt around the waist, a skirt made of blanket decorated with beads, and anklets made of wire. Such dolls were traditionally used in ritual ceremonies , especially during at wedding ceremonies to check out the bride's chances of having children. Today, dolls like this are made by members of a women's co-op in KwaZulu, South Africa for sale. We visited them in South Africa last summer.
