Zande long flat mask, Congo FINE Type of Object: Face Mask Ethnic Group: Unidentified People-Zande (') Zaramo(') Country of Origin: Democratic Republic of Congo Materials: Wood and Pigment. Approximate Age:Midd 20th C Dimensions: Height: 21 Inches. Overall Condition: Age cracks and chips on the bridge of the nose Additional Information: Based upon certain stylistic elements and extended associations this mask is tenatively identified to the Zande where flattened and stylized masks are used by members of a cult known as Mani . Though generally shown with a rounded forehead a few Zande msks have a slightly squared forehed and prominent orbital ridge and extended nose. Generally the mouth is Mani is a secret society that served to cure illnesses, prevevnted spells being cast or could cast spells or send a malevolent witch against an enemy. The Mani cult enrolled women and men and worked to assure health and to secure wealth and prosperity for the cult member. Few masks have been identified to the Zande people and these highly abstracted masks are today not common as most were thought to be made during the first third of the 20th Century.
