It is challenging to fully understand in that is has some characteristics that are shared by a number of different mask styles among the Yoruba. It can serve as a Gelede mask or even and Egungun mask. ANother class of masks are those known as Okooro that appear during Agbo or Ekine ceremonies dedicated to water spirits. THe mask with its marvelous coiffure presents a beautiful woman with braided hair reaching upwards in the shape of animal horns. The dancer whose body is covered by reed mats will visit the houses of chiefs and elders informing them that the ceremonies are about to start and she will dance to the shrine to call the spirits. This mask is dramatic in its sculptural presence and in the visual pun identified to the eyes where the pupil is shown as half while the wearer's eyes peering through the small slits would animate the eyes.
