H 15 1/4" X W 10.5" / late 19th Century / Certificate on hand. This mask was tested by an established European laboratory. EGUNGUN festivals are celebrated annually or biennially in honor of the ancestors in all communities of the OYO region. These festivals comprise a series of rituals performed within the compounds of the lineage that makes up the community or city. They last several weeks. Public rites are performed : in the IGBALE or forest of the EGUNGUN, the market square, in front of the palace. There is a small ship in front of the mask, and on the upper right ear of the leopard. The Mask is otherwise in perfect condition. Please note: Older pieces of African artifacts have imperfections due to time and wear. This fact generally does not distract from the value of the pieces. Although we carefully point out repairs and damages, be aware that not all of the smaller ships, and dents can be enumerated.
