Description
Traditional Ceremonial Tribal Men's Blanket Sambet Village Highland Atoni People Ayotupus Regency West Timor 39" X 81" 1.3 KG kg packed weight Mid to Late 20th C RARE AND OUTSTANDING EXAMPLE This textile was collected from the descendants of royal household in 1991 and would have been considered a vintage piece at that time. The "buna" decoration has been woven into the textile - not embroidered on. If you look at the close up detail you can see how the ends of the discontinuous supplementary weft have been woven into the field. The amount of "Buna" in a piece is an important factor as this work is highly prized. "Broken" blankets will often have the buna work recycled into other items. This is a ceremonial textile and as such has never been and can never be washed or laundered. Pieces such as this are taken out just before the ceremony, used, aired and carefully stored. When stored in a dark place the natural dyes will actually deepen over the years and this piece looks better than the day I bought it! This artifact is in outstanding condition. There are no rips, stains or holes. It is a full hand spun "asli" and even the thread used for the buna is hand spun. There is one chemical dye in play - the dark brick red, the rest are natural dyes. This blanket is a pedigree piece and because of this I can provide the name of the weaver - Belinda Haar. It represents a connection to a simpler time, when the world was a much, much larger and seemingly infinite place. When you look at the great collections in the major museums and check the collection dates - many of the great standards by which we gauge all others of the type were contemporary at the time they were collected. More than a blanket - this is a piece of history! I have not signed onto a service that allows me to post super sized j pegs but would be happy to send them through to you on request. Shipping by expedited parcel service to US destinations $22.90 Shipping by Expedited parcel within Canada $14.00C Europe and most other countries by light packet $49.90 I am happy to combine shipments of auctions that end at different times for you.
