Description
Rare Kava-Kava Female MASTERPIECE Easter Island   Exceptional piece Barahona/Geisse Collection This female kava-kava of strange appearance it is not a part of the traditional Rapa-Nui plastic art.  As you can see this is unmistakable a kava-kava, however from the position of the legs, a bulging belly on an advanced state of pregnancy, the delicate arms and hands carved in what must have been a couple of branches overhanging the log; up to that look to the sky praying or imploring, shows that the classic art of the island was never firmly watched over by the nomenclature.  Here nothing matches the established, however no one can deny that is Rapa-Nui art. I can not give a documented opinion of something so strange; I haven’t found information that leads me to visualize some kind of explanation. If we could make an analogy with the contemporary art I would say this is alternative art. This piece is part of the collection acquired in Hacienda Melipilla in 1929. Out of the 172 lots for sale of oceanic art, Rapa-Nui in particular… my grandfather was one of the few bidders and ended up taking all the lots except one.   The Melipilla Collection was on its time the most complete Polynesia Art Collection in our country, luckily for our family, completely unknown for most of the antique dealers.   Now it is the base of our collection.  The ones that took over the hacienda didn’t have much knowledge of the Rapa-Nui art.  Truth to be told, only a few people in Chile was interested on Easter Island… it was a territory filled with smallpox and leprosy, and lots delinquents and political renegades were sent.   Provenance: Acquired: in the auction of the “Hacienda Melipilla” on 1929 ¿     – 1929 Hacienda Melipilla Collection 1929 – 1953  Manuel Barahona 1953 – 1991 Familia Barahona 1991 – 2008 Barahona/Geisse Collection Estimated value: $ 12,000 – 15,000 Probable data: 18th – 19th Century Height: 15 in.  (38,00 cm.).         Without the stand.
