Description
A fine large old classic design Northwest Coast Nootka or Nuu-Chah-Nulth Indian hand carved and painted alder wood Canoe model circa 1900. The canoe has the signature wolf head prow and classic Nootka lines that make these watercraft easily identifiable. These models of full size whaling canoes were made both for sale and play toys for young native boys. I believe this one was made for a Native child , as it has evidence of play use, there are very old nails at both the prow and stern which would have facilitated a string for towing around the water. These nails can easily be removed if one desired. The models made for a native child's use always float perfectly as this one does. The canoe measures a very respectable 23 1/2" long, stands 4 3/4" tall at the prow and 5 1/3" wide at the center. The initials "GJ" are painted on the prow and are probably the initials of the native owner. The boat has a light coat of varnish that has helped preserve its rich painted colors. The boat is in very good condition with some normal wear as expected with age and use, couple of the gunwales are missing, but not really affecting its visual appeal. The canoe makes a great display item and a fine addition to anyone's collection. Please add $18 for careful shipping and insurance (USA). Good Luck and Happy bidding. We'll be happy to combine shipping if feasible. Please check out other current offerings from the fine Northwest Coast collection amassed by the Ethnographer James C. Garner and Beatrice Medicine.
