This rattle was found in an old Baltimore estate with the scrimshawed knife we currently have listed which has a date on the handle of 1857-1860. Completely out of our main area of expertise as we deal in historic Hawaiian and Polynesian items, this rare piece we believe is Haida or Tlingit in origin. A fantastic and tactile object it measures approximately 11 1/2" in length and 5" at its greatest width and is guaranteed to be a genuine object from a Northwest Native American culture dating in our opinion to sometime in the 19th century. The patina is totally original and all the paint is original as well and is exactly as acquired by us out of the estate. A rattle whose shape we have not seen before, this like all of our auctions is being put up without any reserve so good luck and be sure to check out our other interesting listings.
