Description
Hohokam Prehistoric Black Clay Shaman's Pipe The Hohokam were prehistoric Indians who lived and farmed around the Gila and Salt River or Phoenix Basin area between 300BC - 1400AD. During the 15th century, the Hohokam culture disintegrated. This pipe is a real Hohokam artifact. It is made of a black clay that is granite tempered. Tobacco and special Indian herbs would be placed in the bowl and then a small piece of charcoal set inside for smoking. Being a very special ceremonial pipe only the Shamans were allowed to participate in its use. Besides mineralization and wear consistent with this pipe's age and use, under microscopic examination there is also residue of the smoking mixture in the pipe stem. There is one very minuscule rim chip, but the pipe is in otherwise excellent condition. It measures 2-3/4" long and 1" in diameter. This piece is fresh from the old Tucson Estate of Mr. E. L. Thomas. Mr. Thomas was a long time collector and most of his items were personal finds. He was also a meticulous record keeper, and this item was found in Arizona. The pipe has also been authenticated by Mr. Fred Gumbart, owner/appraiser of Arizona Galleries (520-322-6388). He specializes (by appointment only) in consultations and official, licensed, and accredited appraising of Fine Period Antiques, Fine Art, Ethnographic Art, Pre-Columbian Art and the Asian Arts. Fred is a lifelong collector of artifacts, and has the most astounding memory of anyone I have personally known. You may view this item or any of our other antiquities, fine art or artifacts at our gallery, by appointment only. We are Antiquities, Plus...
