Description
NGBAKA FACE MASK - ZAIRE The Ngbaka are from northwest Zaire now called the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They use masks representing ancestor spirits in elaborate initiation ceremonies. Their mask carving has a similar style to that of the Bembe and especially the Lega. Mbaka masks are recognizable primarilly for their ridged noses. This mask has been encrusted and it is approximately 13" x 6 1/2". It has been pierced for attachment. Wood and Pigment. FROM A PRIVATE AMERICAN COLLECTION. Mid 20th Century. KelBx450.
