Description
Marka Janus-Faced Mask with Brass Type of Object: Mask Ethnic Group: Marka Country of Origin: Mali Materials: Wood, brass, cotton cloth, beads, pigment Approximate Age: Mid to late 20th century Dimensions: 14 inches Overall Condition: Good Damage, Repair: none Additional Information: This is one of a finest examples of this mask. The Marka, living in Mali, Guinea and Burkina Faso are neighbors of the Bamana. Today they are heavily Islamised, however they often retain the use of masks and figures for ceremonies and rituals closely related to the Bamana. This mask with two faces covered with sheet brass is probably related to the N'Tomo initiation mask for young boys found among the Bamana. It is uniquely Marka by the brass sheet covering the face. This mask was carved by a master sculptor. Its curved shape and the work done on the details of the faced make this piece desirable! **015423** All content, including pictures, Copyright Africa Direct Inc., 2006 Add Us To Your Favorite Sellers!
