Description
Marka helmet mask SUPERB Type of Object: Face mask Ethnic Group: Marka Country of Origin: Mali Materials: Wood, cotton, brass Approximate Age: MID 20th C Dimensions: 49 inches Overall Condition: Excellent Damage, Repair: None Provenance: From the private collection of BADOU SISSE, who had a gallery in Abidjan, Cote D'Ivoire, for forty years. He closed the gallery last year, and ill health has caused him to decide to sell his collection and move to the village in Mali where he grew up. We were fortunate to buy the collection. Additional Information: The Marka, living in Mali, Guinea and Burkina Faso are neighbors of the Bamana. Today they are heavily Islamised, however they often retain the use of masks and figures for ceremonies and rituals closely related to the Bamana. This mask covered with sheet brass is probably related to the N'Tomo initiation mask for young boys found among the Bamana. It is uniquely Marka by the brass sheet covering the face. Stand is for illustration only. Let me know if you'd like a stand.
