Description
Marka Janus helmet mask with headdress SUPERBType of Object: Face maskEthnic Group: MarkaCountry of Origin: MaliMaterials: Wood, cotton, brass, glass beadsApproximate Age: First half 20th CenturyDimensions: Height is 21.5 inchesOverall Condition: ExcellentDamage, Repair: NoneAdditional Information: Stand is for illustration only. This is one of the finest examples of this mask I have ever seen. The Marka, living in Mali, Guinea and Burkina Faso are neighbors of the Bamana. Today they are heavily Islamised, however they often retain the use of masks and figures for ceremonies and rituals closely related to the Bamana. This mask covered with sheet brass is probably related to the N'Tomo initiation mask for young boys found among the Bamana. It is uniquely Marka by the brass sheet covering the face.Recommended Reading: Kerchache's ART OF AFRICA**022246** All content, including pictures, Copyright Africa Direct Inc., 2006 Add Us To Your Favorite Sellers!
