Description
This is a large conch shell (species Strombus gigas) trumpet carved with figures in preclassic Olmec style. It is carved with three figures in a ritual context, one figure holds a bowl with smoke curls probably meaning offering copal incense. This object appears to be old and it may be but I do not have provenience other than it was reportedly acquired in Guerrero state in Mexico, so it cannot be guaranteed to be genuine from the ancient period. The best we can say is the style is consistent with other examples of Olmec/Olmecoid works. Here is another photo of the piece: http://home.att.net/~mlmcdon/strombus2.jpg . The shell trumpet is large, over 9 inches long and weighs approx. 4lb. 9oz. Please add $10.00 for US shipping. This is a 5 day auction. The shell trumpet is offered at a modest opening bid with no reserve. Good luck!
