Big Kuba Raffia Textile Type of Object: Textile, hanging People: Kuba Country of Origin: DR Congo Materials: Raffia, dyes Dimensions: 30 by 180 inches Overall Condition: Used Damage, Repair: None. Additional Information: These textiles were used as currency, and as ceremonial offerings, in the Kuba Kingdom, which is in what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo Large textiles like this were used as ceremonial and a women dancing cloth in the Kuba Kingdom, which is in what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo, and was formerly Zaire. Kuba textiles were also used as currency and ceremonial offerings. This textile was probably made by the Ngeende, a Kuba subgroup. Men did the weaving, women did the dying and embroidery. Raffia, which comes from the raffia palm tree, is notoriously difficult to work with. Soaking and pounding were both used to soften the fibers. Each piece took months to make. The motifs are applied without any order, but, they seem to have a certain connection between them. Only the artisans can tell with precision the meanings of these designs.
