Description
Kuba Appliqued Skirt Type of Object: Raffia Textile, hanging Ethnic Group: Kuba, Ngeende group Country of Origin: DR Congo Materials: Raffia Dimensions: 221 X 38 inches. Overall Condition: Used Damage, Repair: Uneven edges are common in this kind of textile. Additional Information: These textiles were used as currency and as ceremonial offerings. They were also used as ceremonial and a women dancing cloth in the Kuba Kingdom, which is in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and was formerly Zaire. This textile was probably made by the Ngeende, a Kuba group. Men did the weaving, women did the dying and embroidery. Raffia, which comes from the raffia palm tree, is notoriously difficult to work with. Soaking and pounding were both used to soften the fibers. Each piece took months to make. While the motifs on the this very large textile are applied without any order, they seems to have a certain connection between them. Only the artisans can tell with precision the meanings of these designs. Recommended Reading:I have written an article on them, included with purchase. For more information and comparative pieces see also Georges Meurant, 1986. Shoowa Design.
