Description
Title: Kente cloth, handwoven textile Asante (Ashante) Type of Object: Textile Ethnic Group: Ashante, Asante Country of Origin: Ghana Materials: Rayon, cotton, silk-some combination Approximate Age: Mid 20th C Dimensions: 124 X 78 inches Overall Condition: Good Damage, Repair: Handsewn strips, a few minor separations, very small holes, one area which appears to be a water stain; dry cleaning might fix. Additional Information: This is a man's cloth, the larger size. Estimated age more than 40 years. This is a particularly complex pattern. Kente cloth is the royal cloth of the Ashante, of Ghana. In many cases, the thread was obtained by carefully un-picking silk garments, and reweaving them. The looms have two or three heddles. Legend says that the Kente cloth weavers learned their skill from watching a spider, Anansi, who is a significant figure in African folklore.
