At best a tentative and problematical origin for the figure is given to a southeastern Gabon people, perhaps the Ndumu or a coastal group. It stands straight as an unsexed figure with a head turned to the side, an unconmmon posture in African sculpture. The body is defined through a series of dark banded forms carved in shallow relief highlighted by darkening through the use of a heated iron tool to darken the surface to give the figure a more dramatic appearance. The striations of the hair and the prominent medial crest appear to have been recently re-carved however the body of the figure itself does have some age attributed to it. The broad and rounded forehead and sharply pointed chin are strong sculptural forms. Wear and surface damage from insects indicates that the figure should be attributed some age and long use. It would be interesting to conjecture the actual age of this unique sculpture considering it’s unique surface decoration. This is an interesting figure for it combines styles of a number of Gabon groups while maintaining its own exceptional charm. It would be a strong addition to a collection.
