Description
This is a beautiful antique mask from the Kumu people, a tribe living in Central North DRC. Characteristics are wide open eyes and mouth and simple geometric features. The piece here shows a round black forehead and straight nose, square eyes and mouth, covered with red and white pigments. Wood and patina are beautiful. Forehead has been restored (often a sign of age and value as only masks of quality were worth repairing). Probably first half of the 20th c. and a real mask made for ritual purposes, not decorative. Dimensions are 14 x 8. I am selling another one, relatively similar (slightly older).
