Description
A very fine early Northwest Coast Haida Indian mountain goat horn carved ceremonial spoon circa 1850-1880. This fine museum quality example depicts a shaman with extended tongue and hands drawn up to his chin and a transforming Raven rests at the base. Note the human mouth on the Raven and the precise carving on this fine example. The eyes are precisely inlaid with their original abalone shell. These spoons were an integral part of the Northwest Coast Indian potlatch tradition ,carved with the family crest figures and brought to the potlatch as a display of wealth and prestige. The carved spoons were common among many of the Northwest groups including the Tlingit, Tsimshian and Kwakiutl tribes as well. This spoon measures 9 1/2" long and 2 1/2" across the bowl and is carved in two pieces held in place with a copper rivet. The spoon has a noted repair to the bottom back portion of the Raven and has a small chip on one of his wings( please see photos) the repair is on the backside and really doesn't affect the display ability of the spoon or off set its exceptional carved details that flow over to back of the spoon. This is a museum quality spoon that will make a fine addition to anyone's collection. These Please add $12 for careful shipping and insurance (USA). Good Luck and Happy bidding. We'll be happy to combine shipping if feasible. Please check out other current offerings including a great Tlingit and Kwakiutl totem. Please email us for more specifics and links to our website.
