Description
EJagham Head Crest, Nigeria, Cameroon (Cross River region)Height: 26 Inches. Wood, leather, rattan . This very interesting and high quality headcrest from the EJagham (Ekoi) people reflects the mixed traditions that exist along the Lower Niger, Cross Rivers and the great Niger River delta as it flows into the Atlantic. The Ejagham  live north of the Cross River in a heavily forested area and are artistically and culturally related to their neighbors including the Ekoi and Boki whose skin covered headpieces are often shared with the Ejagham. Carved headpieces or helmet masks are worn by members of male associations during initiations and funerals. This beautiful carved headcrest, the work of a master sculptor, depicts a smiling face with elaborate coiffure reflecting the hairstyle worn by women. The hairstyle  and the attention given to show the carved teeth in the mouth, the relief carving of the ears and the countersunk eyes with an exquisitely carved edge surrounding the forehead all reflect the skill of the sculptor. The exterior of the mask shows evidence of much use as a shiny and worn surface is noted. The basketry that supported the mask and which was worn on the top of the head with a cloth covering the face also shows signs of use. The Ejagham are known for their expressionistic sculptures and their sophisticated hairstyle and this is one of the better examples available.**028989** All content, including pictures, Copyright Africa Direct Inc., 2006 Add Us To Your Favorite Sellers!
