Description
This is an early 20th century Baga A-Bemp Headress from Guinea. It was used in initiation rituals for adolescent boys. It has a post which was inserted into an armature on a mask. The dance is very athletic and energetic. The mask does not represent a specific bird, but is always a long necked bird with a pot belly. It is carved and painted traditionally in an abstract checkerboard type pattern with bright colors. This piece has a baby bird on the back, but there are also pieces which have 2 babies and a small house on the back. The condition is good, however there is wear to the pigment, the crest of the mother bird has broken off long ago, and there are several areas of insect damage which I have tried to show in the photos (4, 7, 8, 11). It is sturdy and firmly attached to its post. It is painted with red, yellow, blue, green, black and white paint. It has a dirty patina. It is approximately 25" high, 9" wide, and 17 1/2" from beak to tail. This was purchased at an auction house in Indianapolis, Indiana, in 2003 or 2004. It was originally in the Harrison Eiteljorg Collection, and was being de-accessed by one of the area's museums soon after Mrs. Eiteljorg passed away. Mr. Eiteljorg was collecting african items in the 1970's. He and his wife donated many items from their collections to museums. This and several other african items I am selling came from their collection. The old a-bamp headdresses rarely come up for sale. I saw one very similar to this one in a Sotheby's catalogue about 10 years ago. Shipping and insurance within the US will be $35.00.
