EXQUISITE ROYAL NGEENDE elephant MASK- KUBA, ZAIRE DescriptionEXQUISITE ROYAL NGEENDE MASK- KUBA, ZAIRE - incredible. The Ngeende people are a small group of 8500 integrated into the Kuba kingdom in the early 1700s. They employ a number of dance masks in their ceremonies including the Ngeende. The large horn projecting from the top is a stylized elephant trunk representing royal power. This mask is composed of wood, vegetal fiber, cowrie shells, beads. The most intricate beadwork in every section of this mask- geometric designs in beadwork. A padded piece which encases the head. Cowrie shells in perfect patterns over the horn, sides of helmet, padded piece, eyes, colorful beaded accents on the edges from the padding. Wood nose and ears. Lined in a coarse burlap- type fabric.
