Description
Dogon figure, encrusted, 3 feet, African Carving Type of Object: Standing male carvingEthnic Group: Dogon Country of Origin: MaliMaterials: Wood, stain and pigments.Approximate Age: Mid 20th centuryDimensions: Height is 36 inches.Overall Condition: GoodDamage, Repair: Front of base broken , large chunk missing from base, but figure still stands.Additional Information: A fascinating Dogon piece depicting a standing male figure holding a bowl. The patina over much of the piece is encrusted. The surface and texture on this sculpture shows sign of use and age. This Dogon male holding a container used to carry magical substances is standing on a circular base. It could well represent a Nommo, one of the mythic ancestors to whom prayers are made to insure that it rains. Among the Dogon of the Bandiagara escarpment near the Niger River in Mali, art and mythology are often the same, sharing visual images whether carved or spoken of during their rituals. A ritual device such as this old example is kept in the lineage elder’s house and is used during annual rites that take place during the winter solstice known as ‘goru’. The rough surface is the result of much ritual activity where offerings would be poured over the seated figure. The well carved arms and legs and the shaping of the head and detailing of the beard and the sculpting of the mass of the upper chest makes this the work of a master carver of some skill. This Dogon carving would be of good addition to a collection.
