This figure must be, by its characteristics, what some describe as the 5th essence of the Rapa-Nui art.  This shows the spiritual mother of this people, divested of superfluous ornaments such as elaborated hair combs, earrings etc.  The rough features of this moai contrasts with the more contemporary figures of the moai papa.  This is an important piece, voluminous and of a very dense wood.  It is part of the most valuable pieces of our collection and it’s reserve price goes above $5.000   This piece is part of the collection acquired in Hacienda Melipilla in 1929. Out of the 172 lots for sale of oceanic art, Rapa-Nui in particular… my grandfather was one of the few bidders and ended up taking all the lots except one. The Melipilla Collection was on its time the most complete Polynesia Art Collection in our country, luckily for our family, completely unknown for most of the antique dealers.
