Very powerful Spirit-figure of the Baule people.The inserted gold metal pieces provide this unsual figure with extraordinary powers.This figure was probably placed in a shrine to honor ASYE, which is the oldest goddess of the Baule people. These figures are called Asye-Usu, and are spirit figures, considered to form the entourage or attendants to ASYE, the " earth goddess", who controls fertility, agriculture, and prosperity. These spirits request individual images which must be carved to their specific instructions. Please note:  Older pieces of African artifacts have imperfections due to time and wear.
