The use of canopas dates to the Incas and is cermonially used in today's active Aymara/Quechua culture. This beautiful canopa has a hollowed out hole on the back that was once filled with tallow and untu (a ceremonially applied llama fat) and buried in the fields to insure fertility and a successful crop. The carving is beautifully stylized and has a great patina and wear from the years - a wonderful treasure!
