Description
tookalook Store A Superb Haida (NWC) Argillite Pole by Cooper Wilson Questions? Inquiries? Please email me at info@tookalook.com This is a superb argilite pole by Cooper Wilson, one of a small group of young Haida master carvers. With amazing precision and excellent style the enclosed is 'slick' and fine as seen. Depicting an raven atop a killerwhale the work is signed and dated 1994. Measuring 5" 3/4 x 1" x 1" 1/2 and in excellent condition the pole is a little gem. Below is Coopers bio: COOPER WILSON (1962 - ) I was born on Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands) February 16, 1962 to two Haida parents. My mother was of the Raven clan. She died when I was young so my grandmother and grandfather, along with my dad raised me. They taught me about food gathering and living off the land. My biological father is a great grandson of the well-known Haida carver Charles Edenshaw. I was sent to a residential school when I was in my teens and when I returned to Old Massett I started carving the black slate called argillite. By the age of sixteen I was supporting myself by selling the other artists carvings and then these artists (Donald Edgars, Fred Davis, Martin Williams, John and Harold Yeltatzie and Richard and Louis Widen) encouraged me to start carving when I was 17. Not only did these artists encourage me they also helped me make the tools I needed and showed me how to improve my pieces. I prefer to carve argillite, but I love to carve ivory as well; like the walrus tusk I just finished. It has an octopus on the bottom coming out of its den which is also the blow hole of the argillite Killer Whale base and the whole tusk is the dorsal fin of the killer whale. There is a sea bear holding a sea mammal and the head of the bear is also the head of the killer whale with its dorsal fin going up the tusk. I also carve wood, gold, silver and copper. In addition to some button blanket designs, Ive done two limited edition silk screen prints: one of a Wolf and one of a pregnant Raven. I do a lot of Raven sculptures and Killer Whales because these are my clan crests. I belong to the Kun Laanas clan from White Creek. The large argillite sculpture I am working on has two Raven stories intertwined on it. One is the story when Raven stole the light and the other is the Raven and the clamshell. When Im not carving I like to hang out with my kids of four boys and three girls and four grandchildren. Im building a longhouse as my home, a teaching studio, gallery space, and gathering place. I guess its for everything. Life is pretty good for me. I like to see my kids doing artwork and being interested in their culture. I love to carve and Im happy when I am able to follow through with projects I start, such as my new longhouse studio. I have been selling my artwork everywhere (Alaska, California, Arizona, New York and across Canada). I sell to private collectors, museums and art galleries. ==================================================== Click HERE for High Resolution pictures.
