ZULU INDUNAS PRESTIGE STAFF Origin/ Tribe: South Africa, Zulu People Age: At least late 19th C., possibly mid 19th century Materials: Wood, Animal Hide, black paint Size: Height 65" (165 cm), Width 3.25" (8.4 cm) Provenance: Ex. Adam Prout, Worcestershire England (Purchased 3 years ago for $2000), Prior to that in a collection in Scotland Description: This rare prestige staff is carved from a single piece of wood and is presented on a custom metal display stand. It was carried by a chief or other high ranging individual as a sign of authority and prestige. The top features triangular motifs in the shape of bowties highlighted with black paint and surmounted by an arrow head. It still retains its animal hide hand grip although most of the hair is gone. There are the remains of an ancient 4 inch paper label at the end. This object exhibits a magnificent dark varied patina. There is an old glued mend to the left side of the arrow head and some slight loss to the side of a bowtie. Note: In 2007 a dealer in Brussels sold a very similar one for $12,000 at the San Francisco Tribal Art Show!
