Description
"Pombibele" rhythm pounder Type of Object: Ritual instrument Ethnic Group/Tribe: Senufo Country of Origin: Mali/Cote d'Ivoire Materials: Wood, stain Approximate Age: 20th century Dimensions: 40 inches Overall Condition: Excellent Damage, Repair: Crack in base Additional Information: A fine carving in classic Senufo style. The so-called "rhythm pounders" are used in funerals of important members of the "Poro" Society, a powerful social regulatory force throughout much of coastal West Africa. Though these pieces are associated with loud booming noises when struck on the ground, many of them are simply carried, parade-style, and not used to make sounds at all. The art of the Senufo was important in adding African sculpture to the collecting mainstream, and remains popular and sought-after to this day.
