Ambassador Hawkins is currently the U.S. Ambassador to Togo. She has previously served the State Department in Zaire, now Democratic Republic of the Congo; Burkina Faso; and Cote D'Ivoire. Richard Hawkins is also a career Foreign Service Diplomat. Both of them have connoisseur's eyes. The Hawkins' have collected African art for many years, and we are delighted to offer a portion of their magnificent collection. Additional Information: A dynamic example of the famous "musician" figures of the Baule. Seated figures playing a large drum like this piece are very rare to find. As for other ancestral figure, this one was carved by blacksmiths and used as guardians or protective spirit. This charming figure has an elaborate coiffure, scarification all over the body, and is heavily encrusted with sacrificial offerings.   He was probably personal in nature, perhaps displayed on an individual or even on an entire family shrine. The objects shows evidence of extensive use and good age.The Baule are members of the Akan group and one of the largest and most-powerful groups in Cote d'Ivoire. In these cultures, musicians are considered skilled people and said to possess the power to communique with the other world through their instruments. The large drum specially produce the sounds, which carry specific messages. Recommended Reading: See BAULE, by Vogel.
