As for other ancestral figure, this one was carved by blacksmiths and used as guardians or protective spirit. This charming figure has an elaborate coiffure, scarification all over the body, and is heavily encrusted with sacrificial offerings.   He was probably personal in nature, perhaps displayed on an individual or even on an entire family shrine. The objects shows evidence of extensive use and good age.The Baule are members of the Akan group and one of the largest and most-powerful groups in Cote d'Ivoire. In these cultures, musicians are considered skilled people and said to possess the power to communique with the other world through their instruments.
